Joshua Royce Mauldin Microwaves his Two-Month-Old Daughter
In Galveston, Texas, Joshua Royce Mauldin, 20, confessed to putting his two-month-old daughter in a hotel microwave and turning it on for 10 seconds. (You can read a transcript of his confession here.)
The baby girl suffered critical burns and has had several surgeries since then.
Now Maudlin is on trail and his attorneys are trying to convince jurors that he was insane. If they are successful, Mauldin could spend the rest of his life in a mental institution.
Doesn’t seem likely though. Michael Fuller, professor of psychiatry, testified that Mauldin’s mental illness would not satisfy the legal requirements for being legally insane. He said it was possible that a combination of Mauldin’s mental illness, low-blood sugar and a sudden withdrawal from an antipsychotic drug could have triggered a brief period of insanity.
However, Edward Gripon, a Beaumont psychiatrist hired by the prosecution, said such a brief period of insanity was unlikely since Mauldin had not been formally diagnosed with low-blood sugar and that he was off antipsychotic drugs for two weeks.
Bottom line? Joshua Royce Mauldin is a sadistic bastard. In fact, Fuller testified that he couldn’t find a logical reason for Mauldin’s behavior.

This case has been on Nancy Grace. The wife was actually making excuses FOR HIM! I can’t believe that.
Neither one of them should ever see that baby again. I hope and pray that she goes to someone who will love her forever.

This “insanity” defense is total B.S. The issue is did he know that what he was doing was wrong when he did it? The fact that he lied to police about how the baby was injured clearly illustrates he knew he’d done something horribly evil and was trying to cover it up.
His mother says he was “suicidal” and running into traffic right after he microwaved his baby. Too damn bad all those cars missed. Would have saved the taxpayers all the money that’s going to be wasted trying this clearly guilty P.O.S. And they should lock his wife and mother up right beside him for defending his evil ass.

This is totally shocking. Putting a helpless new born into a microwave. This ass hole needs to get fried. If the mother had not to walk in the room what else might he have done. Then she stood by him. So what she is saying totally that what he did was okay. Then he used the old insanity defense. Too bad he is not related to me!

Huzzah! Guilty! Let’s hope he gets the 99 years instead of probation.
What a big heart this foster mother must have to want to take on a baby that will have severe medical problems for the rest of her life. I pray to God the children’s services people have the sense to let her have the baby without a fight.

Ihavekidstoo,
I know a distant relative of the baby. She is with family. The mother, father, and paternal gma are not allowed to have contact with the baby ever again.

What a sick fuck. As another commenter said, the fact that he LIED about the incident proves that he knew damn well it was wrong.
Have I mentioned how much I hate the insanity defense?!

I am not a lawyer nor do I work in law. Sadly my sister-in-law was murdered last year and the guy who killed her tried to do the insanity thing. I spoke to a friend of mine who has a PhD in Criminal Justice and he informed me that 9 out of 10 people who plead insanity do NOT get off on it. You have to really be a loony toon to get it to work for you. For example look at Charles Manson, granted he is in a max security prison, but even he is in PRISON not a mental hospital. There is hope.
Even though he did lie about his disgusting act of abuse and neglect he did fess up to it. Just pray that the little girl continues to make it through.

Loving_mom, thanks for letting us know. I know I was wondering how much time he would get.
If it were up to me, he would die for what he did. That is beyond cruel. I wonder what the hell was going through his head to make him do something so horrible. I’m guessing she was crying and it was getting to him but instead of walking outside for a few minutes or something like that, he punched her, put her in the fridge and then the microwave.
I’m guessing he has no loving feelings at all towards his daughter. As far as that goes, apparently the “mother” doesn’t either.

Well, 25 years might be enough if prison guards make sure it gets around to the other inmates just WHY Mauldin is in there.
As for the “mother,” what a piece of work SHE must be. First, she hooks up with a guy that she apparently knows has mental problems, tries to get him committed, THEN turns around and leaves her 2-month-old daughter in his care. She’s as “mentally ill” as he claims to be!
And for the record, I think 90 percent of the people on trial who plead “mental illness” are using the term as a substitute for “evil.” Maybe evil is a type of mental illness, I don’t know. But I do know Joshua Mauldin is evil for what he did to his little girl and thankfully he’ll have 25 years to think about his crime.
Unless the other inmates take care of him first, of course.

I truly don’t understand this generation. Depression is just an excuse to get away with what they do. He need to be put in jail together with others (inmates) and hope they make him feel what he did to this poor baby. As for his wife she shouldn’t even be allow to even see this child and join her husband in jail too. Insane is all BS.
I’ve been told I have depression or manic which ever way you want to go-I’m not on meds. and have a real life-I may be disable because I have COPD breathing problems and at times of the year I live in a bubble in a matter of speaking and I am not going around hurting people. I have a wonderful son and two grandsons and so help me any one who would hurt them I’ll be the one in jail for killing that person. No child should suffer like this. So many sad stories out there and something has to be done and portect the children for they are helpless. If the law was stricter maybe people like these would think twice about doing something to the kids. I would like to have 10 minutes with these people and show them how it feel to be cooked a live and do the same to them they did to a child. May God Bless All Children.

Ihavekidstoo - To make you feel better about 90% if the time before someone enters the pen the inmates already know what they have done. News coverage, which this story was all over down here, guards talking about it or whatever other means they have. My dad did some time in the pen, not for child abuse of course, and he has told me some stories and that is one thing he did tell me. Inmates always know or find out.
Sylvia - I agree with you. A lot of people from my generation are using the Postpartum Depression excuse. PPD is not a good excuse for anyone to take advantage of. I suffered PPD with my daughter and I will tell you I never in my life felt so horrible or felt like a bad parent. I would NEVER EVER in my life hurt one of my babies. When you tell someone you have PPD they look at you like you are a savage beast because they read in the news they so and so microwaved their baby because they have PPD.

My personal opinion is for this 2 animals get the same treatment that they did to the beautiful little angel. let them feel what she felt so they could see how much they hurt that baby. hope he rottens in hell and the mother follows. and to the people that have the baby now give the baby to real people that will take care of her and protect her from ANIMALS like them.

What a crock of crap for a excuse. Come on low blood sugar and some missed meds made him wish to nuke the baby??
That is the poorest excuse I have heard in years.
I pray this one does get all he can plus some. I also hope when he gets there that before they can get him in PC that someone whispers just what his crime is and he gets the classic jail house retaliation they give out to those who hurt abuse neglect or kill babies and kids.

syliva: I suffer from depression. HOWEVER - a BIG however - I never, in any state of mind, would EVER think of harming my daughter.
What this man did was horrible. I wish he’d get more than just 25 years, and that poor little baby girl. Makes me want to go wake my three year old up and tell her how much I love her and cherish her.

Poor angel. WTF is wrong with these two? My father is bi-polar and has had horrible depression episodes my whole life (including 2 suicide attempts), but not once did he ever do anything to us two girls more than raise his voice and ground us. He was also a drug addict and drank rum every other day (despite the mental toll of these things on a child), there was never any kind of physical abuse.

This is a person who should not be released back into society, even after 25 years. I feel so bad for that poor little baby… And this demon-possessed pile of crap wanted to become a preacher!

That news link said he moved to become a preacher. Awesome, gotta love religion. I don’t trust anyone that says ‘i’m a good parent’ … actual good parents NEVER SAY THAT and most preachers are highly suspect.

Lisa808, I have to dissagree with you about the “I’m a good parent” thing. But I agree with you about being suspect of preachers (I’ve met two good ones out of about one hundred that I have met). One preacher told my when I was ten years old that I was going to hell because my parents didn’t take me to church every Sunday. Then he went on to describe hell in detail to me. Just sick to do to a child!

P.S. I disagree with the first because of the way mothers are tward each other. Case in point, go back and read kellyisgreen on this article and several other people on other articles on this site. Rather that these people being real and saying that some times kids are tough and you want to smack them (I did not feel this way when my kids were tiny, but when a two year old looks at you and says no for the millionth time or your sixteen year old tells you he hates you, come on, you are not human if you don’t experience frustration) they act as if their brain never had a bad thought and that makes them perfect. The rest of us must be crappy parents for ever getting upset. It’s okay to feel like you want to hit them, but IT IS NOT OKAY TO HIT THEM. That’s is what seperates most parents from the monsters on this site. We get angry or frustraited and walk away. It makes me sick that people want to judge me for normal emotions and thoughts that I would never in a million years act on. I admit that sometimes I want to smack my kid, and I also admit that I have never acted on that and always walked away. If you all think that is so horrible, then……………….

I totally disagree with being suspect of anyone who says “I’m a good parent.” I have said that on numerous occasions because it’s true. You have never seen my name on this site.
I, too, though am suspect of preachers. I find most of them to be nothing but hypocrites and that is certainly the case here.
