Miguel Matias kills daughter for texting a boy
He strangled the girl, then proceeded to dispose of the body by stuffing her in the boiler.
You might be thinking “who the hell would kill their daughter for sending a text message”? Well, not a sane man, and this guy was quite far from sane…
Miguel Matias has had previous emotional problems (that’s a nice way of saying he’s fucking nuts) and was institutionalized after… trying to set his car on fire with his children inside.
One would think that when you try to set fire to your children, they would be taken away from you… (well, they should be!)
Everyone is to blame for her death, Matias, the police, child protective services and the mother. You’ve all failed.

What a crazy dad! we have already discussed this on another board I goto, My question is WHY did they let this girl go to his house all by herself? She had an older sibling that was left to stay with his mom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMFG that is so terrible! Well, my dad yelled at me and temporarily took away my phone for texting somebody, but he hasn’t done more than that!

What a psycho! Last I heard it was normal for teen girls to like boys and yes, even speak with them on the phone.

This is so sad! That guy was a complete physco to do that to his own daughter! I have a 12 year old nephew who has an emergency cell phone and my sister has strict rules that he does not text message. The other day she found out that he had been text messaging and she grounded him, she didn’t kill him! GEEZ! Poor girl!

Social Service agencies have to be trained in identifying signs of mental illness and be given the right to demand assessments.
Because of the rights of individuals, ambulance, police and social service workers fear being wrong, and perhaps dealing with lawsuits because of it.
It’s hard to get someone assessed, and/or committed, even when you know that they’re suffering with a mental illness.
I’ll bet money that someone in that family knew that Mr Matias was not mentally healthy, but did nothing about it. It’s not social services that failed that 14 year old girl…it was her own family who had the power to do something and did nothing.
Outsiders do not have the power to do it…and it’s as it should be, otherwise we would be living in a totalitarian or communist society where the individual has no rights, and government all all of them.

Newsday said he’d been hospitalized twice before.
The AP says he applied for mental health services, but Medicaid denied his request.
Then there was the whole car burning attempt. Sounds like everyone knew.
Dad had legal visitation rights and had been hospitalized thus treated by professionals. I think mom just trusted the system too much.
It’s a cost thing. We are willing to take some losses, including lives, especially lives of poor people, because treating everyone would be very costly. People who treated him probably thought he’d only harm himself.
It’s a barbaric system. It sounds like maybe everyone, including Miguel Matias, acted to address the danger. It just wasn’t enough.
Yes, we are rightfully tentative about removing rights, but this man had a host of extreme incidents. Counselors often mistake suicidal tendacies to mean someone is safe from harming others. It’s not either/or. Sometimes someone is suicidal because he or she is afraid of violent impulses and wants to protect others from themselves.
I’m not surprised that his daughter’s sexuality was a trigger for him. I can’t imagine anyone leaving that poor child alone with him.
