Parents Behaving Badly

Parents leave child in car, go on shopping spree

by joelnet on November 26th, 2007

Laura Havens and Casey Shields Yes folks, it may shock you, but… it’s still illegal to leave your child in the car.

Both parents of the 2-year-old boy had to learn this lesson the hard way as they have both been arrested. She is charged with confining an unattended child. The boyfriend gets a bonus charge for possession of marijuana.

Police arrived to find the toddler alone, wet and crying in 36 degree weather.

Police said the mother gave no remorse for leaving the boy in the car and said she left him there because he was asleep.

Bad parents! Bad!

(thanks for the tip beverley)

From the article cited, I don’t think the baby’s name is Jason Litten. I am under the impression that Jason is someone from the Sheriff’s office?

Regardless, another example of poor parenting and poor choice in mates. Stupidity is unprejudiced.

Well, it’s about 43 degrees here right now and I have a sweatshirt and shoes on and I can’t stand to be outside for more than 5 minutes, it’s FREEZING! Poor kid-what were these people thinking??? Oh, wait, they weren’t I guess. Getting food at 2:30 A.M., Those “people” should have had their child home in his nice, cozy, warm bed (if they even had one of those for him)!

While this is horrible and I am in NOOOOOOOO way advocating this behavior - This is not as bad as the Hooters mom. At least this little one escaped with his life. Hopefully he will end up in a loving home with parents that give a sh*t about him.
Jess - I agree. This baby should have been in a nice, cozy, warm house instead of alone in a car.
BTW - another couple with the “f*ck you” looks on thier faces. So sad…..

Unbelievable! As many dipshit parents as there are out there who have been arrested for this type of crap, you would think people would learn but NOOOOOO. I’m glad the little boy didn’t die, as so many of these little ones do, as in the case of the Hooters “mom”.

April, usually we agree, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I think this is just as bad as the Hooters mom, and worse in a way.

At least she had the sense to CLAIM she left her child by accident. These two morons admitted to leaving him, as if they thought any right-thinking person would have done the same. It’s by the grace of god - and investigative powers of the authorities in Hagerstown - that this baby didn’t freeze to death.

I wonder, though, why they released him to a family member of the boyfriend. I don’t recall the article saying the boyfriend was actually the baby’s biological father.

This baby could be the poster child for fast-tracking abused and neglected children into adoptive homes! I’ll bet there would be a line stretching from Maryland to Jersey if the authorities announced he was up for adoption!

I think what I said came out wrong - The same as Hooters mom - Yes. Better in the fact that we still have a child on this planet that wasn’t taken to early. That’s what I meant when I said “not as bad”. I am not a big fan of leaving a child in a car, for any length of time EVER!! Hot or cold. My sentiment was just to show that I was glad the child didn’y die. Sorry for not coming across very clearly.

Sorry for the lack of typing skills and proofing. My son just spilled cereal all over the floor. OOOOOOPPPPSSSS!!!

I understand. We are in agreement! And we had a major milk spill in our house this a.m. Maybe our sons could pool their resources and they’d have a complete breakfast on the floor! ;)

That’s probably true. I was happy to drop him off at school this morning. Whew! Some days he can wear me out (and it’s not even 9am). So, I asked why he spilled…No wait - Threw the cereal across the room. His answer - The cat was trying to get it. Okay, so knocking it all over the floor is better??? BTW - I had some laundrey that just came out of the dryer in a basket next to where the bowl landed. Not only do I get to shampoo my carpet tonight, I also get to do laundry (again). Oh, well…. I can laugh about it now. =0)

Yes, they always seem to have their pathetic myspace page. Rock and roll and sunglasses and tattoos. And its just like all the rest: It shows a miserable facade of profanity and toughness. Don’t mess with me or I will bite the head off a bat head off and spit it at you…

I don’t suppose the child welfare people will have a look? It will give them a great insight into her child care talents..

Horrible, but what if they came back to the car and their son was missing?

OMFG, more couples with “We don’t care cuz we’re so stupid and proud of it! Now f*ck you!” faces! They should rot in prison! I hope that poor baby was okay, sent to a loving home!

Where I work at we see alot of this really before I left i was calling the police at least once a week, one time this couple from Idaho told the police officer they weren’t from here and were just “shopping” and passing thru, The officer gave them a ticket told them that the next time they passed thru they needed to remeber that this is North Carolina and not Idaho.

Yup just a ticket. It was repulsive. and here’s the kicker the parents were upset and insulted that they had recieved it.( if it had been longer CPS would of been called.)I guess they thought that the $$$ they had was to absolve them from everything. They had left a 7-year old in charge of thier 13 month old that was in a car seat asleep in the back. Sad thing for me is I’ve gotta go fill in at that “piece of crap” site tonight. You know…….I Could probably post the incident report from that day considering I am filling in there tonight, as long as some spaces are blacked out…;)

Truth is a young child should never be taken shopping. You need a babysitter or one parent stays home with the kid.

You leave the kid in the car and there is weather and kidnapping. Take the kid in the mall and there is kidnapping and two year behavior in the breakable department. A two year is generally not happy in a store.

Shopping is NOT appropriate with kids until mature equals that of the average serious six year old. Also young legs need to be able to stand and walk a couple hours without pain. Before that fashion fit clothes shouldn’t be that important to the kid anyway.

Actually I was thinking back on my own childhood and have to laugh. In the “old days” no one thought much of leaving a child of 2 in the car for a short time of 10-20 minutes or a child of 5 or older for a couple hours.

Of course back then society wasn’t as mobile and crowded so kidnapping from cars was not common and usually quickly caught (at least according to what got into news reports).

And of course since most cars didn’t have air conditioning we did see much difference in driving with the kids in the car for hours and leaving a restless or misbehaving kid in the car with a book or toy. of course back then when we didn’t have air conditioning in all cars, parents were well aware that windows should not be rolled up if you wanted kids to live. Nor did parents leave kids locked inside cars whole afternoons or days without any checkup. There was awareness of how hot cars got.

We still considered people who left babies alone in cars for more than a quick run in the store crazy. We expected babies still needed “servicing” every 30-60 minutes. And babies were generally thought a lot more delicate than 2 year olds. In fact you didn’t expect to drive long distances without major stops for care and a cool place to do so.

On the other hand babysitters were allowed to be as young as 8 depending on maturity. Which was considered fine in the car - IF they knew where to come get you and IF that rest in a cool place was happening regularly.

Still standards of care and behavior change. Sometimes for good reason and sometimes because other things change and sometimes because they can.

I don’t know, my son hardly misbehaved when I took him shopping when he was a toddler. I mostly had him in a stroller.

I don’t like leaving my child with someone. I’d rather take him with me. (My husband works an off-shift.)

What was so bad about this was that the police found the boy soaked and crying, it was 36 degrees outside. It never ceases to amaze me how sorry some parents are, only thinking of themselves.
