Woman trained children to act mentally retarded, deceiving social security for 20 years.
Rosie M. Costello has been charged with coaching her son and daughter to act mentally retarded. Costello has been “training” them since 8 years of age; that was over 20 years ago.
During interviews, her son, 28 year old Peter J. Costello, would fake mental retardation. Peter would pretend he could not talk or even dress himself. He would also sit in the corner picking his nose.
Over the past two decades, the Social Security Administration has given Rosie more than $220,000 for her “disabled” children.
Peter is currently facing 6 months to a year in prison. He must repay almost $60,000 that had been given to his family over the years.
Mother Rosie is also being charged. Investigators are also on the search for her daughter who they believe is also faking retardation.

I hate to keep pointing out my mother but this one is close to home too. I was the oldest so I missed this boat but with my subsequent 3 siblings (brother sister brother) she got them all on SSI (disability) in NY State. One brother qualified but the other 2 were scams that I actually think my mother believed(no excuse).My sister & I are fellow escapees from my mom’s nuthouse (I ran away at 16). When my sister was 18 (still at home but wanting to work, imagine?)she went down to the appropriate office and took herself OFF disability.The worker was a bit shocked and my mother later wanted to kill her but by them my mother was too old to kick her a$$ and besides my sister was better at standing up to her than I was.BTW, my mother never worked after I was 4 years old, managed to get a college degree (in criminal justice, no less, on the state’s dime) while I was in high school, watching my siblings when she was in school or at the bar.Some people are very good at working the system and I have less respect for the 2 kids that continued this hoax than the mother. Somehow they never figured out that what she was doing was wrong and that they needed to get a real job or that there are truly needy single parents trying to raise a disabled kid on ‘peanuts’ because these creeps are robbing the system. They make me puke.

The newspaper article kept using that term throughout the story and it is kind of dated. I was wondering about it too. Developmentally disabled/challenged would have been better.I’d say all three of them are ethically challenged for certain.Too bad they can’t get a conscience transplant.

Sam: About the millstone, let’s take this a step further, beyond Nyia. This sorry excuse for a human being was already in jail for molestation charges against his own 6-yo son. How do we know that by doing this against his son (compounded by the murder of his baby sister), Page has not led this young child - now or in the future - to believe that there is no God because no God would allow his children to suffer like this? In this case, IMO, Page has led this child astray and compromised his faith in God, warranting tossing this particular bit of Scripture at him. I could take it a step further than that, even, by saying he’s compromised Nyia’s faith as well, by preventing her from practicing it at all.
I really can’t say that I know where I stand on the death penalty. Sometimes I say DO IT if the crime is particularly heinous or gruesome and there is overwhelming evidence to show that person committed it. Other times I say it’s not for me to judge, throwing stones and all that, because I believe some day Page and all the other ilk of the human race will stand before Him in Judgement. If they’ve not been repentant in His eyes, then that’s between them and God.
As for forgiveness, until he asks for it and MEANS it, he does not get it, even from God.
