Leesa Erin Simmons Kills Baby with Dimetapp Overdose, Gets Plea Bargain
Leesa Erin Simmons, 24, of Altamonte Springs, Fla., gave a lethal dose of Dimetapp to her 4-month-old daughter, Aniya. She said she gave her a half-spoonful of Dimetapp to quiet the fussy child yet a laboratory found 100 times the proper dose of the drug’s active ingredient in the dead baby’s system.
Leesa is the mother of three other young children, one was born after her arrest and lives with her. The other children, a three-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy with cerebral palsy, live with their grandmother. A year before Aniya was born, Simmons’ 5-month-old son died from SIDS.
Leesa had been charged with manslaughter, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years. However, she pleaded no contest to felony child abuse and was sentenced to five years of probation. She is banned her from giving any child medicine without written permission from a doctor, and must attend a 15-week parenting class.
Two dead kids in two years, she fails to show up in court, has two kids taken away from her, no dad(s) in sight, has been pushing kids out like crazy since she was 16, and is stupid enough to give her baby an antihistamine? And all the judge does is make her take a parenting class and give her five years probation?
Who’s more stupid, the judge or the mom? I just pray they take that last kid away from Leesa Simmons before she kills it.

Why was this woman giving a 4 month old Dimetapp? The childrens version says and I quote “children under 6 YEARS:ask a doctor”. There is nothing on the market for a cold or flu that is sutible for a child this young; I know this and I only have one child. This woman has 4 children, so she should definitly know this.

According to this, the state child abuse hotline had received seven complaints about her over the years. I am stunned that she has been allowed to keep her baby.

As tragic as this case is I can’t help but feel a little sorry for the girl - she’s a huge victim herself and she might not have had a better life than what she gave her children..

I bet her life WAS rough.I had a crappy childhood. Real crappy. My son turned a year yesterday. About 6 months after MY first birthday, I had a black eye, courtesy of my drunken mother.Maybe since I waited 24 more years than Leesa Erin to start a family, I have a little more patience.But I would have had some kind of instinct not to pour meds indicriminantly down a 4 month old’s gullet even at 16. She already had 4 other kids to have learned from. Come ON.She should not have her kids given back to her. She needs to do time for her crime of murder.Once again, the state has failed a child.

Look, I’m as young single mother as anyone else, but that is awful. She knows better, and I think her children should be placed elsewhere, she’s under way too much stress. And what’s the difference between ‘having children’ and ‘pushing babies out like crazy?’ she has 4 kids in 8 years, which sounds about average. I think people judge too quickly and strongly when young women have kids and it’s not fair to those of us who really love and enjoy our kids.

You’re right Shay, many young moms are judged harshly. One of the best mom’s I know had her 16 month old when she was 20, which would have been WAY too young for me but she is just terrific. One thing, though. If any woman of any age had 4 kids in 8 years, I would think it was a lot…BUT if she had them by the same dad and was married to him and had a solid stable environment for her BIG family,hey, to each their own. But I hate to say it but I’d bet a paycheck that this chick here has at least 3 baby’s daddies and I think she should seriously learn about some kind of birth control, maybe the permanent kind. Otherwise, there might be more than 2 dead babies.

YOU (Francine) better pray to GOD something like this dont happen in your family the way youre talking about my sister. i know for a fact that she DID not mean to OD that baby and to LISA everybody is not a “doctor”. and for everybodys info the other baby did die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome which is more common in blacks than whites. so all of you need to pray for people like her instead of talking about them because last i checked Jesus was the only PERFECT person to walk on this earth, not you guys so why dont yall pick up a bible and read it instead of criticizing people you dont even know. OH and her life wasnt rough we have two wonderful parents who did their best to raise us right. i think they did a damn good job. people make thier own decisions. parents can only do so much

oh and i also think ANYBODY who gets pregnant in their parents house, without a job, and NO HUSBAND, should be STERILIZED. i ALWAYS work six or seven days a week and i have to pay MY TAX MONEY to pay for someboby elses children and i dont qualify for Medicare or Medicaid or anything else. whats wrong with this picture? young girls and women need to keep their legs closed and not open to every guy that tells her shes cute

babies bodies do not metabolize medication the way adults do. how the hell is anybody supposed to know that when you can go right into any store and grab bottles of CHILDRENS MEDS complete with the droppers and syringes.
the people who need to be criticized are the people who market that stuff for the kids in the first place.
there was just something on the news to other day they said HUNDREDS of babies and little kids are rushed into the ER each year for OVERDOSES of CHILDRENS meds even after the the parents read the instructions. how do you explain that miss know-it-all?

Since I’ve been called out, I must reply. Yes, babies don’t metabolize meds the same way, which is why there are LABEL WARNINGS not to give children under two years medication without consulting a doctor first.
Yes there may be kids going in droves to the ER for accidental overdoses, but that’s the issue when people DON’T READ or are TOO STUPID to follow the directions.
We had a dad here in Colorado claim that he “only” gave his two kids a double dose of Nyquil. He gave them a lot more and now they’re dead. He’s in jail, where your sister should be for lying to a judge and killing her child.
After all a laboratory found 100 times the proper dose of the drug’s active ingredient in the dead baby’s system - hardly a half-teaspoon like your sister claimed.
I didn’t find her guilty. A judge did. The facts are a matter of public record that have been reported in the press. Are you sending nasty threatening emails to the judge and Orlando Sentinel reporter, too?

Leesa’s real sis, I did not say that everyone was a doctor, but both my children see one on a regular basis. Before either of them takes any kind of medication for the first time, I at least consult him with a phone call or office visit. My four month old has taken mylicon (for gas), tylenol (for pain), and amoxicilian (for an ear infection) but none without consulting her pediatrition for the correct dosage for her size. She has had one bad cold and for that I used tylenol and a humidifier. Notice that list does not include any kind of otc cold medicine. That is because every idiot knows not to give an infant cold medicine. So call it an accident if you like, but the truth is your sister is just plain stupid, and worse homicidally wreakless.

This is frightening. It makes you wonder if her other baby really died of SIDS. I could understand this light punishment if the chil dhad died from a slight overdose but 100X the recommended dose? This really scares me that she is not in jail and has other kids living with her. May God watch over them.
