Mom of Amber Alert Child Arrested for Leaving Kid in Car

by admin on November 22nd, 2006

Amy Elizabeth CalvinI admit: there have been occasions when running into the store that I’ve been tempted to leave the kids locked inside the car. I’ve never done it, though. And I’ve certainly never thought to leave them in a running car. 22-year-old Amy Elizabeth Calvin of Rocky Mount, North Carolina had no such second thoughts. She left her two-year-old girl Mariah Poland in their ride while mom darted in to a convenience store. This was enough time for a street punk named “Red” to steal the vehicle…with the little girl inside. Thankfully, Mariah was recovered unharmed. But this lapse in judgment was so severe that prosecutors have decided to slap Calvin with a charge of misdemeanor child abuse.

Calvin isn’t as bad as Red, who ditched the car with the kid still inside. Really, dude - how hard is it to drive by a hospital, drop the girl off, and be on your way with the wheels? And what kind of moron takes a car with a kid in the back seat in the first place?! That said, this was a monumentally stupid decision by the mom. She has the gods to thank for her daughter being found alive.

Parents: take your kids with you into the damn store. Your kid’s life is worth the minor inconvenience, wouldn’t you agree?

[…] Keith Tipton and mgraber sent me this story earlier today about Geontae Glass of Gadsden, Alabama, who was reported missing after his mother Shalinda Glass said she left him in the car to go get some juice. I was all set to write up a post about what a neglectful mother Glass was for leaving her kid in the car. Haven’t we seen enough horror stories about that lately? But then hot tipper Rebecca wrote in with the horrifying follow-up. Poor Geontae was never missing: his mother’s boyfriend, Kevin Andrew Towles, apparently killed him - and Shalinda staged the carjacking to cover it up. […]

[…] Dillion insists that she’s a “good mom” who made mistakes, but shouldn’t be charged with felony child abuse. Too bad she never heard of Amy Elizabeth Calvin, who found out the hard way what can happen when you leave your child in a car unattended for even a few minutes. Not to mention what might have happened if the 6-year-old had figured out how to get the vehicle out of Park. Good GOD, woman, where’s your paranoid parental imagination?! […]

There are undoubtedly some dumb people out there. I’ll give you that. And everything that can be done SHOULD be done to keep kids safe. BUT the judgemental, over-zealous nature in which this site blasts not just parents that endanger their kids but blasts parents who make decisions this site deems moronic, is absurd. This web site is less a resource than it is a forum for opinionated diatribe.

Wow. A blog being used as a forum for opinionated diatribe. Imagine that.

I know it’s hard to go into the store with a baby but you should think about these things before you have children. I NEVER leave my son in the vehicle, EVER. He’s only two months old and it’s hard to take him in every place that I go into, especially the grocery store or gas station but I do it because I know if something happened to him, I would never forgive myself and it only takes one time for something horrible to happen. It’s just not worth taking the risk.
