10-Year-Old Refuses to Ride with Drunk Parents
Hot tipper and blog friend Karen Rani of Troll Baby sent along this treasure of a story that occurred in Center Township, Pennsylvania. The son of Paula and Kenneth Sutton of Monaca, PA was driving in his father’s car with his mother tailing right behind them. Then dad, who was already drunk, attempted to smoke a bowl…and promptly crashed into the guard rail. Mother Paula Sutton leaped out and told the boy to get in her car. He refused. Instead, he walked along the side of the highway, with his drunk mother chasing behind him. Motorists reported the boy to police, resulting in both mom and dad being nicked for driving while intoxicated.
I can’t put it any better than St. Petersburg Times writer Jim Webster, who hailed the kid as having “the kind of smarts that skip a generation”. I guess those DARE classes are useful for something after all.
As for the parents, they seem to be doing their damnedest to sound contrite. (At least, the mother is.) Whether this is sinccere or for show is anybody’s guess. I lean towards “show”. But, hey, blogging these stories three to six times a day would make Pollyanna herself reach for the crack pipe of despair. Keep your fingers crossed that this is the wake-up call these two need to get their asses into a recovery program.

That’s pretty sad when the 10 year old child is so much more intelligent than his parents! Way to go, kid.
