Who Do We Sterilize First - The Mothers, or The Fathers?
My wife has long maintained that people who have proven their inability to raise children ought to lose the privilege of producing them. And City Councilman Larry Shirley of Charleston, South Carolina couldn’t agree more. The local politician caused something of a ruckus recently with his contention that a sterilization pogrom for shitty parents is precisely what South Carolina needs. Shirley’s comments were prompted by a recent hold-up video store holdup committed by a group of children ranging in ages from 9 to 14.
But this raises a sticky question: who do you sterilize? Shirley’s response: the mothers, of course! “These mothers need to be spayed if they can’t take care of theirs. Once they have a child and it’s running the street, to let them continue to have children is totally unacceptable.” Very well put, Mr. Sexist Asshole. One problem: it takes two people to make a kid. Why not call for the forced neutering of the fathers? Are the fathers of these children even still in their lives? Or are they off inseminating more women even as we speak? If anyone’s going to be snipped, IMO, it oughtta be the dads, who aren’t limited by 9-month reproductive cycles.
Of course, any discussion of forced sterilization brings to mind the United States’ horrific history of eugenics legislation. Sterilization laws (which were on the books in 21 states before Nazi Germany made them seem less-than-fashionable) targeted all sorts of undesirables, such as the retarded, the deaf, and Native Americans. Any bets which economic and racial classes today would be saddled with the highest rates of spaying and neutering were these programs put back into place?
Of course, State Senator Robert Ford’s suggestion that the video-store kids could have been deterred from a life of crime if the city built a rec hall is just as mushy-headed as Shirley’s call for forced tubal ligation. Unlike Mssrs. Shirley and Ford, I have no easy solution to the problem of bad parents and children run amock. It’s part and parcel of a free society that some people will abuse their freedom…sometimes with brutal consequences. In fighting the scourage of shitting parenting, prisons, social services, and public shaming are still the best weapons we have at our disposal.
