Parents Kidnap Daughter, Attempt to Force Her to Get Abortion

by admin on September 18th, 2006

RifleUsually, you hear tales of conservative parents who refuse to let their daughters terminate their pregnancies. Today’s tale from Salem, New Hampshire presents a bent twist on that hoary tradition. Nicholas and Lola Kampf of North Yarmouth, Maine stand accused of tying up their 19-year-old (read: legally adult) daughter, Katelyn, and attempting to coerce her into aborting her unborn child. The dynamic parenting duo attempted to get their girl into New York, where they believed the abortion law was more favorable to Katelyn’s advanced pregnancy; they made it as far as Salem before Katelyn escaped during a bathroom break at Kmart.

According to police, loving dad Nicholas had a .22-caliber rifle in his Lexus and a magazine clip in his pocket. You know, just in case Katelyn wasn’t open to seeing his side of the story. Goddess knows that, if my daughter ever got pregnant, I’d prefer to see her bleeding to death in the street than have a lovely baby grandson to take care of. (I’m waiting for the defense lawyer’s spin of this one. "He never really would’ve shot his own baby girl, of course. He just wanted her to believe that he might have shot her.")

What could these people possibly have been thinking? Get this: according to the report, the Kampfs were stressed out that the father of their daughter’s gestating child was in prison. So they decide to commit a crime that warrants locking them up in an adjacent cell? Gooood thinking, folks. Now, admittedly, as a parent, this news wouldn’t thrill me either. But there are ways to cope that don’t involve compulsory abortion and felony kidnapping at riflepoint.

(Thanks to hot tipper Rebecca for the story!)
