Former NBA Star Ralph Sampson to Sweat Two Months Jail for Back Support

by admin on September 6th, 2006

Ralph SampsonIt doesn’t pay not to pay. So learned former hoops star Ralph Sampson, who’s been ordered to take the perp walk and serve sixty days time for failing to pay over $300,000 in support arrears. Sampson and his willie were pretty active during his tenure, with the former ACC champion fathering eight kids by five different moms. The two months jail time is a plea agreement his lawyer worked out with the U.S. District Court, which involves Sampson coughing up the dough he owes his spawn; without that money on deposit, Sampson faces up to two years in the pokey.

God, dads, when will you learn? Miss a support obligation, and it isn’t the town sheriff who’ll be knocking on your door anymore - it’ll be the feds. Especially when the amount involved rises into the triple digits.

    Situation:

Non-custodial parent #1 - Lives in Washington, DC; Makes $80K per year
Child of #1 - Lives in Arkansas
Non-custodial parent #2 - Lives in Arkansas; Makes $80K per year
Child of #2 - Lives in Arkansas

The cost of living in Washington, DC is 3 times as that of Arkansas. The average cost of a 3-bedroom house in Arkansas is $85,000, while the average cost of a 3-bedroom house in Washington, DC is $415,000. It is neglectful, injudicious, and irresponsible to charge both NCP’s (#1 & #2) the same amount of child support. If a man fathers a healthy child in Arkansas, divorces, remarries, and later fathers a child whom has special needs and is physically challenged; The State of Arkansas still requires him to pay 17%-25% to the mother of the first child no matter if the mother from Arkansas spends the money on the child or not. Thus both children suffer unnecessary turmoil due to the Arkansas “Good ole’ boy system” that continues to practice greed, biasness, negligence, and aloofness to date. Arkansas law does state the judge has the discretion to lower or raise the amount of the non-custodial parent’s obligation, but it never lowered to fit the circumstances. The cultural impact of creating a thoughtless child support impacts our culture in a negative manner, thus the problem is ignored and in some cases exploited. Should a father whom pays 17%-25% of his income to the custodial parent of one child even if he is raising 3 or more children currently living with him? There are many cases, mainly involving the children of minority parents, where the child support funds, given to the non-custodial parent, are spent on things that do not benefit the child…Katrina/Child Support – Corruption/Misuse of funds…no difference. I’m just telling the truth. It is time that somebody finally did. Just as the majority of those dislocated by hurricane Katrina were diverse cultures, so lays the harsh reality of child support policies. A recent national study allegedly indicates that out of all incarcerated persons; approximately 10% are in Federal Jail, 33% in local or county jail, and 57% in State prison. It is very reasonable to assume that the majority of these people are African-American. Just like the victims of the aftermath of Katrina are mainly African-American, the policy makers lack good judgment and based on the apparent misuse of funds, lack accountably. Most of us adhere to wholesome religious principles and Christianity teaches me to treat everyone fairly and simply do the right thing. For example, the food stamp system negatively impacted a culture when many of its participants would sell the food stamps 50% of the value for cash or dope on the street. Leaders recognized the problem and changed policy to implement a food stamp program that employs electronic cards. This is an example of how policy makers simply did what is moral and correct. The State of Kansas implements a child support program that involves income deviation. Each state should develop its own method for normalizing income of the non-custodial parent, similar to the one implemented by The State of Kansas, but due to ignorance, racism, hatred, and greed, some states have not incorporated interstate income deviation within their child support guidelines. I was raised in Arkansas and a University of Arkansas at Little Rock graduate. During my summer visit to Arkansas, I heard speeches encouraging diverse cultures to consider relocating to the area, while Arkansas policy and individual hatred and private rhetoric reveal the opposite. We all remember the infamous letter written by Kristy A. Harper. When will the hatred stop? Iraq, Katrina aftermath…It is time that WE simply do what makes good wholesome common-sense? Please write a letter to the address below expressing that The State of Arkansas adapts a method for normalizing interstate income involving child support just like other states:
