Home Alone: Parents Party in Las Vegas, Leave Kids Behind
My wife and I recently celebrated NewsYears by going to Portland, Oregon by ourselves for the weekend. Mind you, we left our four kids with our moms, who graciously agreed to care for them in our absence. I don’t feel superior or righteous that we made sure our kids were well cared for - it’s something that, as parents, is simply our duty. Obviously the notion of “duty” was lost on these two parents from San Ramon, California, who for some reason thought they could skip out on holiday to Las Vegas and leave their five-year-old and nine-year-old sons by themselves. The boys ate cereal and frozen food in their parents’ absence. Their plight was discovered when their grandmother called them, realized what was going on, and contacted the police.
The parents were supposed to have arrived home yesterday, after their Monday flight home was canceled.
I have a six-year-old and an eight-year old. Even if our four-year-old and two-year-old weren’t around, I could never imagine walking out the door on those two and telling them they were on their own for several days. Outside of worrying that someone would break in and kidnap or kill them, I couldn’t even stand the thought of my six-year-old boy waking up in the middle of the night and looking for an adult, only to remember he and his sister had no one to turn to. What were these people thinking?
