Dad Who Reported Fire-Damaged Christmas Arrested for Child Support Arrears

Was Jessie Marquez attempting to do the right thing by his daughter? Well…it’s hard to say. Firefighters can’t even say for sure whether Marquez’s home contained any presents when it burned down, as he later told the Red Cross. What is for certain is that Marquez is now sitting in jail for failure to pay $26,200 in child support for his three other kids. The father claims he worked seven days a week just so he could put presents under the tree for his daughter, Veronica. His sob story drew little sympathy from the judge, who ordered him held until he could muster up $4,000 of the arrears. (Which, if Marquez has been working and not just slacking, is an ugly Catch-22.)

The good news? Regardless of whether or not her father was working his ass off or puffing dope while watching football, Veronica Marquez will have a nice Christmas, courtesy of her community.
