Parents Behaving Badly

British Mom Abandons Naked Baby in Garage

by admin on December 24th, 2005

garage.jpgAs far as I can tell, Britain doesn’t have “safe haven” laws that allow a mom to drop off a baby at a safe spot without legal consequences. There’s been a roaring debate about such laws here in the states, with some arguing that they dissuade young women from getting pre-natal care. That debate might grow to a roar in Britain after this story of a newborn found abandoned in a garage in Yeovil. Hospital staff have nicknamed the baby “Angel”, and police are searching furiously for mom - not to prosecute her, it seems, but to make sure she isn’t dying.

Yeah, this was a bad decision on mom’s part - no question - but not an irredeemable one. Here’s hoping Jane Doe is found safe and sound - and gets some serious help.

I agree. I wonder what drives a woman to this point…..I don’t believe anyone would do this unless they felt they had no other choice.

Isn’t it strange how we have double standards when it comes to abandoning children. When men do it, they are described everywhere as heartless scum. When women do it they are described as victims needing help.

When men abandon kids the focus is on the nasty evil man and the irreparable harm his actions will have on the child. When women abandon kids the focus is on finding the poor women and getting her some help and reassuring everyone that the child is doing well in care.

When women abandon kids the police are desperate to reunite the mother and the children. When men abandon kids the police want to hunt him down and get a court order keeping him from having any contact with children ever again.

Not that any of this behaviour is in any way unjust, sexist or loaded with misandry.

No double standard here, George. I also feel for a dad who abandons his kids because of his own emotional shit. He’s missing out on a wonderful experience as much as his child is.

I’m not necessarily sure the double standard exists as badly as you describe. Some of your assertions seem over the top. In what instance has a man who’s walked out on his family been hunted down police and barred from any future contact with kids, e.g.?
