Parents Behaving Badly

Provo Parents Oppose Gay-Straight Alliance

by Jason on November 8th, 2005

homophobe.gifLooks like The Gays are at it again! This time, they’re trying to infliltrate Provo High School and form some kind of Alliance with the God-fearing straight kids in the hopes of - that’s right! - TURNING THEM GAY. This, at least, according to Stephen F. Graham, head of something called the Standard of Liberty Foundation. Mr. Graham is the voice of opposition to a proposed extracurricular Gay-Straight Alliance club at the high school in Provo, Utah.

Mr. Graham’s chief concern is apparently to protect the school district. Not from leather-clad teens singing Village People tunes, but from the avalanche of lawsuits that’s sure to come once the straight kids’ parents sue the school the school because their kids have “come out as homosexuals after attending club meetings”. Not to mention the fact that the straight kids will inevitably “later contract the HIV virus and AIDS”. Hard to find fault with that logic! (Unless, of course, you’re one of those people that believes in “research studies” and “common sense”.)

The article presents an overview of what the club actually stands for (promotion of acceptance and tolerance of gay students), and also features quotes from parents and students who are in favor of the organization. What? It doesn’t? A Utah newspaper running a one-sided story about gaybashers? Go figure.

And I was beginning to worry that not enough people had WAY too much time on their hands. Never fear - hate is alive and well in our country. We’re feeding it to our children.

My PFLAG group is talking about trying to help start Gay-Straight Alliance here. We’ll probably have about as much luck as Provo but we’ll keep trying.

It takes the cooperation of the high schools and they’re afraid of controversy.

I saw a “morality thermometer” on another site and I thought it was perfect. Way on the bottom (causing no ire in the right) was war, hunger, poverty, and childhood disease. In the middle (causing some ire in the right) was violence on tv and something else. Way at the top (causing the rights’ heads to explode) were gays, gay marriage and abortion.

    Sounds about right.

to top it all off, the “Standard of Liberty” reference is to a story in the Book of Mormon where a young prophet/general is so incensed at traitorous conspirators taking over the government, that he whips his troops into a frenzy by tearing off his own tunic or whatever, writing some inspirational slogan on it, and hoisting it over his head. That’s the SOL [so to speak].

Not sure what’s more annoying/disturbing: the insider-y religious overtones to the anti-GSA protestors, or the invisibility of it in the media accounts of the conflict.

This bothers me on so many levels. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon), I hate seeing other Church members behaving in such an un-Chritlike manner, not to mention giving the rest of what I truly believe to be the Lord’s Church a bad name. Also, as someone who reverences the Book of Mormon as true scripture, I’m beyond offended that someone would invoke Standard of Liberty, which is about defending truth and one’s family and freedom, to spread what is, at best, crap, and at worst, a malicious, homphobic, unChristian, hatred-promoting, vicious bag of crap. I’ll let you guess which end of that spectrum I think they’re at. I hate to think that these people are promoting the attitudes that, on one hand, lead young people to thinking so little of their own worth that they kill themselves, and on the other hand, give people the absolute wrong idea about Christ and His followers.

Another interesting tidbit… Stephen and his wife successfully brainwashed their 20 something year old son into believing he wasn’t gay. I have had some online interaction with their son and I have to say that I truly feel sorry for him.

Mr. Graham and his wife own a publishing company called Tidal Wave Books. Mrs. Graham wrote a book called “My Darling from the Lions” Here is the synopsis:

“Compelling journal entries reveal a mother’s life-changing spiritual journey paralleling her son’s struggle with and success in overcoming pornography addiction and homosexual tendencies. Told from the unique LDS (Mormon) perspective, this true story refutes both the enabling view of “same gender attraction” and the “homophobic” attitude, leading us to rethink recent sociological trends. More important, here is a testament to the power of faith, the proximate possibility of change, and the reality of experiencing inner peace, whatever the nature of our personal challenges.”

This is so completely sad that it breaks my heart. Their son posted on his personal website that he too is releasing a book. Gee, I wonder what it will be about?

Also, recently said (in a public online forum) “The LDS Church is not against homosexuals, they are only against homosexual behavior.” This statement is a Class A example of bigots hiding behind religion to justify their actions.

Stephen Graham successfully supressed his son (until the poor guy pops and goes postal anyway), so I’m sure he feels the “power.” Now, he’s out to “conquor the world.”

There are so many things I would like to say to Stephen Graham and his wife…

Hey there. The Grahams’ “brainwashed” twenty-something-year-old son here. I am truly sorry to see you displaying your bigotry and hatred for people who are doing nothing but trying to help people and spread a little hope in a hopeless society. Rest assured that your hateful comments will be filed in my listing of intolerant behavior toward us.

Please, don’t pity me, I’m happier than you could ever imagine, and my parents had nothing to do with my process of change. It was my decision, my doing, my idea, and my parents were only along to provide outside support and love.

There are also many things I would like to say to you, but suffice it to say that I love you all, and hope that in time you learn the truth of Christ’s Gospel of peace and repentance, and our ability to overcome ALL things through Him.
