Mom: 22-Year-Old Is Immature Enough to Marry My 14-Year-Old
I’ve already written about the case of Matthew Koso, the 22-year-old who married 14-year-old Crystal Guyer after getting her knocked up. At the time I asked, “what the hell is her own mother doing agreeing to all this?” Well…I’m still trying to figure that out. But I know what Peggy Koso, Matthew’s mother, thinks…and it ain’t pretty. According to her, the marriage is okay not just because Crystal is a very mature young woman, but because her son is so childish.
“But you have to know Crystal,” she said. “Kids are maturing at a very fast pace today, so in her case, I think she knows what she wants and she can make up her mind about it. What people don’t realize, too, is that Matt is not emotionally 22. He’s not mature like other young men his age are, so he is really at the same level of maturity as Crystal even though there are those years between them.”
So the reason they ought to continue their sexual affair and marriage is that they’re both too irresponsible to make sound decisions? Whoah. And you WONDER how these kids found themselves in this fucked-up situation in the first place. Good job, moms. Your Parent of the Year awards are in the mail. Same goes for the dads…if they’re still at a known address, that is.

The mother says the options were:
a) abortion — but it was too late
b) adoption — which was out of the question
c) marriage — we have a winner!
Because she couldn’t have the child out of wedlock and keep it, could she?
And I loved the comment “He’s not mature like other young men his age.” Because if there’s one thing 22-year-old males are known for, it’s maturity.

Nebraska and Kansas are sisters under the skin. Of course she couldn’t have the baby out of wedlock. The shame of it all. Even an abortion would be better because then no one would ever know. You notice she didn’t say she had moral objections; just that it was too late.
Marrying her 14 year old off was the only way she could ever hold her head up in church again. Sure, people can count, but she can always claim their bouncing 8 pounder was a preemie.

Wow, Ann. Thanks for making me glad I live nowhere near that part of the country.

I remember the 50’s. These people have been trying to time travel back there ever since.

I’m still not convinced this “boy” belongs in jail. Probation maybe? Parenting classes? Job training? Not all 22 year olds are really 22 and there seemed to be tacit permission from both their parents in spite of the restraining order. Shame on them, but what’s done is done.
They’re married (sort of), they have family support for what it’s worth, and they seem to care about each other and the baby. Jail time might send a message (or there might be an election coming up) but breaking up this new family seems too harsh. He wants to take responsibility; With strict monitoring, I’d let him try. One thing about fundamentalists, if that’s what they are, I bet both sets of grandparents will be helping out with the baby - maybe too much. At least they didn’t throw their pregnant daughter out in the snow.
I never thought I’d weigh in on this side of a statutory or contributing case and I’m not at all sure of my ground, but not everything is black and white. I’d be howling for his head if he seduced her and ran or denied it or if he was a predator who hung around playgrounds offering candy. Maybe he is, but it doesn’t read that way.
I don’t even know why all this bothers me so much but it does. I keep getting this mental image of the guy going out to buy diapers.

I keep thinking that he bears a striking resemblance to Cameron, from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”.
