Parents Behaving Badly

Parents Draw Jail Time for Teenager’s Truancy

by admin on August 30th, 2005

truancy.jpgDenise and John Reitz of Ira, New York are just the latest parents in the US and the UK to face jail time for not ensuring their child gets to school. Mom’s 40-day sentence began Monday; dad will stay in jail on the weekends starting in October. The couple’s defense? Their 17-year-old daughter just didn’t want to go to school. The couple also charges that two of their other kids (ages unspecified) can’t read or write, implying that the local school district is to blame. That may well be…but does that mean you give up on your children’s education? Why not homeschool? Why didn’t the 17-year-old formally drop out, if she truly doesn’t care about school? Does she have any direction in her life, or have her parents raised an unmotivated child who’ll sponge off of others for the rest of her life? No matter how you spin this, it seems impossible to justify what looks like a pure case of parental apathy.
