Pregnant Woman Dies in Fiance’s Car During Street Race
Sigh.
A woman who died during a street race in Union City was eight months pregnant and engaged to be married to the driver who crashed their car, authorities said today.
Now, her fiance may face manslaughter charges.
Annisha Reddy, 18, and her fiance, Ravinesh Chandra, 22, both of San Jose, had just left a family gathering and were on Union City Boulevard shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday when Chandra began racing with another motorist. He told police he did not know the motorist.
Lt. Kelly Musgrove said Chandra’s 1996 Nissan Maxima reached speeds of at least 80 mph near Kohoutek Way, where the speed limit is 35 mph. The car jumped a curb and smashed into a tree. Reddy died a short time later at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.
And I can’t even make a Darwin Award crack, as the least genetically gifted of the two survived.
Eight months. The baby was viable. Doesn’t that warrant a double manslaughter charge under California law? Or does that only apply in homicide cases?
